BAS Observer November 2017
14 BAS OBSERVER LED campaign on social media by Peter Allison T he fate of Brisbane’s street lighting is in the hands of our elected representatives. Elected representatives, like most people, are usually most easily influenced by self-interest. So, if they find that significant numbers of their constituents are contacting them, and expressing similar concerns about poorly designed LED street lighting, then they may take an interest in the issue and act in the interest of voters – to keep themselves elected, of course. But first we must alert the people of Brisbane to the issue of poorly designed LED lights in the current BCC/Energex LED street light trial. Social media is the way. We are now active on three social media platforms: Facebook Twitter YouTube On all three platforms the campaigns are called: Brisbane LED Street Lights . So, you can search using this term on each platform and find our campaign pages and content. You can also search for posts and content using the hashtag #BCCLED on each platform. But we need as many people as possible to go to our three social media pages and click to: Like , Follow or Subscribe . (See the three screen-grab images at right.) On the Facebook page we need you and all your friends to click the Like button for the page. Once that is done, click Like and Share for lots and lots of our individual posts. But the first priority at this stage is the Like on the page itself. On Twitter we need everyone to click Follow . They will then see our subsequent Tweets in their feed. You can then click to re-Tweet our individual posts. On YouTube we ask you to click the Subscribe button. And then click to Like and Share as many of our videos as possible. So please get active on this. We need to rapidly build awareness of this campaign. Tell your friends. We also ask you to ‘vote’ and ‘make waves’ with email – and snail mail too. Please go to the BAS website page: http://www.bas.asn.au/index.php/light-pollution/light-pollution . Here you will find the email address of the Chair of the BCC Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Amanda Cooper ( brackenridge.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au ) . Councillor Cooper must be made aware of public concerns about LED street lighting. If she fails to receive complaints, she will fail to act on the issue. The BAS website page also provides text that you can cut and paste into your email or snail-mail letter. So please get active on this too. If we do nothing and say nothing, you know what will happen. ■
